News & Notes (May 6th)

Just saw the post about changing swarm hosts and there's no solace coming for those of us who can't stand the unit.  Developers continue to believe the unit is fine outside of ZvZ and their proposed changes are awful in non-mirrors on either side (making the viper either better or worse).  I'm not sure what it is that the devs like so much about the unit, but it appears as though it will take a very long time for them to truly address the issue.

Several tournaments ran over the weekend and it's worth taking a look at the two biggest:

Snute won Take's ULTRA Invitational (featuring the usual Koreans and a mixed bag of Europeans).  Snute beat some solid players along the way (Dayshi, First, and HyuN), although it's hard to celebrate anyone who uses swarm hosts.  Other notable performances: Socke was somehow able to beat both Patience and MC after being awful in previous tournaments; TLO beat YoDa.

Jaedong won the resurrected Lone Star Clash, which featured Axeltoss and Incontrol as the main commentators--I've lost my enjoyment of the latter due to his unapologetic bias (for EG and Jaedong in particular).  The small tourney had a very weak Protoss group, but featured a few of the better non-Code S players Koreans like Polt and Bomber--both of whom continue their uneven play (although their series was entertaining).  Jaedong beat viOLet and Polt to win, while Stephano continued to abuse viewers with tedious swarm host tactics (he should have lost to Petraeus, but bored his opponent to death).  There weren't any other notable wins.

I want to thank Aligulac for the kind words about the blog--it's much appreciated.

The latest round of proposed balance changes have come out, both of which are meant to help Terran.  Making bio upgrades a little cheaper seems fine (I'm not sure what impact it will really have), but I really like the idea of getting rid of the little-used transformation servo upgrade and allowing hellions to become hellbats the moment the armoury is finished.  I'm quite fond of hellbats and think they add a lot of options to Terran players so I'd like to see that go through.
